25 injured as Hatiya AL men clash with local lawmakers' supporters
At least 25 people were injured in a clash as supporters of a local Awami League leader allegedly vandalised the house of an incumbent lawmaker of Hatiya upazila in the district yesterday morning.
A group loyal to Mohammad Ali, vice-chairman of local AL unit, launched an attack on the house of Fazlul Azim, an independent member of the House of Noakhali-6 constituency, at about 11:30am, Azim alleged.
The incident drew supporters of Azim to resist the attackers who vandalised furniture and other valuables of the house.
Chase and counter-chase took place between the groups and police had to charge baton and fire 51 bullets in the air to bring the situation under control.
The district administration imposed Section 144 at 12:00pm in the upazila headquarters prohibiting any kind of gathering in the area for an indefinite period.
Denying the allegation, Mohammad Ali claimed Azim's supporters attacked his people as they were passing by his house on their way to the municipality office.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Noakhali Sadar Circle, AFM Nizam Uddin, said additional police were deployed to control the situation.
Among the injured, Abdur Rahman, Firoz Uddin and Abdul Momen were admitted to Hatiya Upazilla Health Complex.
Earlier on Sunday, at least 12 people, including Hatiya municipality mayor, were injured in a clash at Oskhali Bazar in the upazila.
The district administration imposed section 144 in the area till 8:00am yesterday to prevent further untoward situation.
