Hasina's Homecoming Day observed

Awami League celebrated the Homecoming Day of Prime Minister and its President Sheikh Hasina yesterday. On this day in 1981, Sheikh Hasina returned home from India after about six years in exile following her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members assassinated on August 15, 1975 by a group of army officers. Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, Bangabandhu's two daughters, survived the assassination as they were in Germany at that time. Sheikh Hasina was elected president of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence in the national council of the party on February 14-16 in 1981. In the morning, the party leaders led by Acting President Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city. AL also brought out a jubilant procession in the city. The procession started from in front of Engineers Institution at 3:00pm ended at Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi. A rally was held in front of Engineers Institution with Sajeda Chowdhury in the chair. Begum Matia Chowdhury, Advocate Sahara Kahtoon, Suranjit Sengupta, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, MA Aziz, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Harunur Rashid and Pankaj Devnath spoke at the rally. Staff Correspondent from Chittagong adds: Chittagong city unit of AL brought out a procession in the port city yesterday marking the Homecoming Day of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Before bringing out the procession they organised a meeting on the premises of Chittagong Shaheed Minar. City unit of AL President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Secretary Kazi Enamul Hoque Danu and AL leader Ishak Mia spoke at the meeting. SUST correspondent says: Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) celebrated the Homecoming Day of AL President Sheikh Hasina on the campus in Sylhet yesterday. Marking the day, they arranged doa mahfil at the university central mosque after Asr prayers.
