Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday said the BNP is demanding midterm elections to save the war criminals and create militancy in the country. Talking to journalists after a function at Zila Parishad auditorium here, he said the BNP's demand for midterm polls is to hinder development activities undertaken by the government. "There is no logic behind this demand," he said. Presided over by Zila Parishad Chief Executive Officer AKS Mahbubur Rahman, the function was also attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner M Rezaul Kabir and Sadar Upazila Chairman Pavelur Rahman Khan. Shahjahan said poverty alleviation and employment generation are the main objectives of the present government. Later, the shipping minister distributed sewing machines among the poor and distressed women and Tk 10,000 among 10 freedom fighters each in the function.
