Two trains escape head-on collision

Our Correspondent, Dinajpur
Passengers of two trains vandalised Phulbari railway station in Dinajpur after negligence of the stationmasters and employees led to a near head-on collision between the trains yesterday. The accident could be averted as locomasters of the two speeding trains, both on the same track and from opposite direction, managed to stop the locomotives. Police said some 2,000 people were travelling on the two trains. Witnesses said the on-duty stationmasters cleared way for Khulna-bound train 24 Down on track no. 2 and Rajshahi bound Titumeer Express on the same track. The trains were coming from opposite direction. After the trains stopped, the passengers started vandalising the station office. Md Abdus Sattar, Umar Ali, and Rawshan Ali, who were on-duty stationmasters during the incident, escaped people's anger along with other staffers. Later the guards and locomasters of the two trains cleared the tracks and left Phulari station for their respective destination. Abdur Rouf, a guard of Titumeer Express, and Abdul Kayum, a guard of 24 Down, said the incident occurred just for negligence of the station authority. The stationmasters could not be contacted as their mobile phones were found switched off. Till filing the report no enquiry was ordered.
