'Resettle dwellers of risky hill slums'

Speakers here yesterday urged the government for necessary steps to rehabilitate people living in unsafe and risky slums in the hilly areas across the city. Reminiscing the June 2007 incident when 126 people were killed in a landslide, they alleged that some influential quarters still continue to make slums on hilltops, violating rules. They were speaking at a rally following a human chain organised by Bangladesh Paribesh Forum at Chittagong Press Club premises. They also called upon Department of Environment to take stern action against influential quarters that are cutting hills to grab the land. Prof Idrish Ali of chemistry department of Chittagong College spoke as the chief guest with Aliur Rahman in the chair. Chittagong College Prof Dr Nurul Basar, Chittagong Union of Journalists Secretary Najim Uddin Shyamal and Jono Udyog organiser Sarif Chauhan also spoke.
