Flood-ruined roads not yet rebuilt in Kishoreganj

People are suffering a lot as most of the roads damaged by last year's flood are yet to be repaired in the district. Niklee upazila remained cut off from rest of the district as flood washed away over two kilometer of Niklee-Kishoreganj Road at Niklee Sadar upazila. As a result, farmers have to spend much money to carry seeds, fertilizer and diesel in this ongoing Boro cultivation season. Roads are only means of communication for over two lakh people in the haor upazila. About 7 kilometer (km) area of the 26 km Niklee- Kishoreganj road remained unusable for long. This is because, about two-km guide wall which used to protect the road at Niklee was totally washed away during flood. About 7 km road stretching from Niklee Sadar to Korgaon Bazaar in Kotiadi upazila is damaged every year due to flood but Kishoreganj Roads and Highways (RHD) Department took no effective measures in this regard. People in the upazila are now compelled to walk seven kilometer extra distance to avail transport facilities at Kargaon Bazaar. Niklee Sadar Union Parisad chairman Karar Burhan Uddin said, floodwater receded five months ago but the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) for not taking proper steps in this regard. Habibur Rahman Habi, a farmer in Niklee Sadar said now he spends Tk 70 to carry a sack of seeds from Kishoreganj Sadar to Niklee. Earlier, he spent only Tk 20 for the purpose. While contacted, RHD executive engineer Joynal Abedin said a project proposal has been sent to the Planning Ministry, but they are yet to get a reply.
