ORCA builds 197 houses for flood victims

Old Rajshahi Cadets' Association (ORCA), an organisation of former cadets of Rajshahi Cadet College, has built 197 houses and distributed among the flood- affected homeless people in Kamarkhanda, Kazipur and Sirajganj Sadar upazila. ORCA president Engineer Siddiqur Rahman said this while visiting the rehabilitated people at their houses recently. He was accompanied by ORCA founder president Dr Abdul Hamid and USA chapter president Sahidus Salam Dipok. Each of the tin-shed homes was built at an expenditure of between Tk 7,500-8,000. Bamboo fences were also erected around the houses, he said. ORCA is working for rehabilitation of flood and Sidr- affected victims, the president said adding their activities will continue in future. While talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Minoti Rani, a 60-year-old widow at Khokshabari village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila said she had lost her land and homestead by erosion of the Jamuna and frequent floods. She took shelter on the bank of the Jamuna following damage of her homestead. It was not possible on her part to build a hut on a piece of land as she became a pauper. Luckily, she got refuge at a tin-shed shelter built by ORCA. She is now happy as now she can sleep at night in peace. Komola Khatun, 50, of the same village said she had lost her homestead during last year's flood. She had no ability to build a home on her land due to poverty. She took shelter at a neighbour's house with her young son and his wife. ORCA solved her problem by building a home. Like the two, many others were benefited by the noble gesture of ORCA. A team of ORCA led by President Siddiqur Rahman companied by founder President Dr. Abdul Hamid and USA chapter President Sahidus Salam Dipok visited the houses recently and collected data of the rehabilitated people.
