10,000 fowls culled in Barisal city in a night
Officials, joined by law enforcers including Rab, cordoned about two-kilometre area in Barisal city Monday night, caught about 10,000 fowls from houses and small farms and culled them after detection of bird flu in two indigenous dead hens.
The killed fowls were buried under ground.
The operation covering wards 22 and 27 began at about 10 pm Monday and continued till early morning yesterday, officials said.
After the operation, the district administration held an emergency meeting and ordered officials at upazilas to remain alert and take immediate steps if the disease is detected anywhere.
Dr. Sunil Chandra Gayen, principal scientific officer at the regional livestock research center and laboratory in Barisal, said that the virus was first suspected in two dead hens brought to the center on Sunday from houses of Soijuddin in Ward-27 and Akkel Ali in Ward-22.
Those were sent to the Central Laboratory at Savar in Dhaka. On Monday afternoon, a faxed report sent to Barisal said Avian Influenza Type HP5 was detected in the dead hens.
Hours later, six teams comprising officials and about 200 law enforcers led by district livestock officer Jainuddin Molla swung into action to cull the fowls.
