Stop blame game
Urge speakers
Speakers at a discussion here yesterday urged political parties to be lenient and stop blaming each other to end the current political standoff.
They also demanded the government to stop the use of mobile courts during hartals since it provides no provision to defend the accused, which is a clear violation of human rights.
Mass awareness should also be created to stop torture on the people in custody by the law enforcing agencies, they said.
Odhikar, a human rights organisation, organised the discussion at a city hotel with Sylhet Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran as the chief guest. Odhikar General Secretary Adilur Rahman Khan moderated the discussion while its Director Nasir Uddin Alan placed a report.
The report stated that political violence left 536 people dead and 35,071 injured from January 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011.
Present political violence has taken a serious turn like in the past 4-party alliance rule. Such an unwanted situation is the outcome of hartals, intra-party feuds, competition to grab tender, public land etc, it said.
To strengthen the democratic process and uphold human rights, political parties should come forward for discussions among themselves.
