Children living near the railway tracks frequently get killed in train accidents. The government has taken no measure to prevent these accidents. These slum children need to be educated about the risks they are exposed to. The silent role played by the railway department in shifting the slums from near the railway tracks is a contributing factor to the tragic accidents. Some 12,000 people dwell in 3,000 shanties at Karwan Bazar slum, which was set up on both sides of the rail line. The houses are made of poly bags, bamboos and carton papers. Most of the slum dwellers eke out a meager living by pulling rickshaws while many lead their lives by cleaning sewer pipelines and manholes of the city corporation. Many of them say, “We are born to suffer this hazard and there is none to look after our helplessness.” In the recent spate of train accidents, the authorities tried to remove the slums in Narayanganj and Dhaka but the plan faced an abrupt halt at the request of the divisional railway manager's office.
