Media and hartal
Sir Frank Peters' very frank opinion on the matter published in the pages of some local English dailies on July 16th gave an interesting suggestion, which has escaped most of us. We are forced to bear the uncalled for misery at the whims of political parties unnecessarily!
Cooperation of the print and audio visual media, by voluntarily keeping away all news related to hartal program and plans; is the key issue to foil the effectiveness of hartals. This could make hartals much less widespread and even possibly ineffective. It should be tried out by our media, jointly and voluntarily; for the next hartal when it comes!
In line with these views, I believe that the lawlessness let loose the evening before the hartal should be dealt with by the police with a heavy hand. If a few skulls are cracked; so be it! It will put the political activists in their proper place; after two or three police beatings; which they rightly deserve; for their lawless activities! Thanks to Sir Frank, for his pragmatic suggestion; and we hope our print and voice media try out; totally abstain from voicing or printing any hartal preparation or related program news, next time the opposition proposes a hartal!
