PM defends President's clemency
After the controversial presidential clemency of ABM Biplob, son of an AL leader, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina openly defended the move saying that the convict was a political victim of BNP-Jamaat coalition.
Even though we take her statement as true, the accused must have proved his innocence through trial under existing law. By not supporting trial for proving innocence, PM actually ignores rule of law which she preaches every day to people to follow.
Interestingly, Mr. President also gave clemency to several other AL activists earlier on different occasions. Observing the incidents, it is presumed that Mr. President has occupied the top post for showing clemency to convicted killers of AL. I think showing clemency to convicted killers shall undermine the rule of law and time has come to make Mr. President accountable to his actions.
