Parliamentary body sees light amid endless severe outage
Amid severe power outage across the country, a parliamentary body yesterday said it can "see light at the end of the tunnel", as the country witnessed Tuesday "the highest power production" in the last 40 years.
The parliamentary standing committee on power and energy ministry once again hoped that the ongoing power crisis would be resolved within the tenure of the present Awami League-led grand coalition.
Emerging from a meting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Shubid Ali Bhuiyan, chief of the parliamentary committee, said, “I can see light at the end of the tunnel”. Asked for elaboration, he said more than 5,025 megawatts (MW) of power was generated on Tuesday, the highest ever power production since the country's independence.
Shubid Ali, also a ruling AL MP, added the government so far has signed 39 deals, aiming to generate power. “That's why we are hopeful to resolve the power crisis within the tenure of the present government”.
Asked about the ongoing power crisis, the committee chief claimed, “The present government cannot be blamed for this, as this problem was created by the past BNP-Jamaat-led four-party government”.
The committee at the meeting discussed in details the present power shortage and asked the ministry, the Power Development Board (PDB), and the Rural Electrification Board to take necessary measures to meet the additional requirement of power during the Ramadan.
The country at present is facing severe power shortage, with power cuts even during the late hours of night. Power situation is worse in the rural areas where people endure 5-6 hours load shedding at a stretch.
The power crisis, caused by short supply of gas to power plants and increasing demand during the Ramadan, has crippled the country when people are undergoing oppressive heat and humidity.
