Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Leaders of Chattagram Bandar Karmachari Parishad yesterday demanded separate pay scale and other benefits for the port employees. They also threatened to launch a tougher movement after the Ramadan if their demands are not fulfilled. They said this while addressing a press conference at Chittagong Press Club in the port city yesterday. Parishad President Mohammad Mamtaj Uddin read out a written statement at the conference. Parishad Executive President AKM Alauddin, General Secretary Wahidullah Sarker and Joint Secretary Fakhrul Islam spoke at the programme. They said only 6.81 percent of the income of Chittagong Port is spending for its staff while Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka spends 60 percent and Karachi Port spends 26 per cent. They said though a decision was taken at a meeting on September in 2009 in presence of shipping minister and state minister for labour and employment to pay 25 percent port duty allowance on basic, 20 percent incentive, Tk 100 shifting allowance and other benefits to the port staff but that are not implemented yet. Around 6000 staff of the port are playing vital role through relentless work in achieving average 12 to 14 percent annual growth but the staff are still low paid, they added. They said they would continue their movement in a systematic way without shutting down normal port activities.
