Five people including three Ansar members were injured in a clash between fourth-class employees and on-duty Ansar members over parking an ambulance in front of the burn unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday. Panic gripped the patients as the groups chased each other for over two and a half hours. At one stage, aggrieved fourth-class employees and their associates vandalised a room inside the burn unit where the Ansar members reside, witnesses said. Among the injured, three are Ansar members Platoon Commander Mohammad Azhar Ali, Ashraful Haque and Hafizur Rahman. The remaining two are fourth-class employees Mansur, driver of the ambulance, and the helper, whose name could not be known immediately. Ashraful said drivers of privately-owned ambulances and the employees beat him and Hafizur when he asked Mansur not to park in front of the burn unit around 9:30am. They even beat Azhar who came to bring the situation under control. On the contrary, the employees claimed that the Ansar members demanded Tk 100 to park the ambulance. When they protested, the Ansar members beat the driver and helper, they said. Abdul Khalek, president of DMCH Fourth Class Employees Union, said, "When we went to mitigate the matter, another group of Ansars led by a ward master chased us." Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim of Shahbagh Police Station said they brought the situation under control and hospital authority held a meeting with Ansar members, the employees and law enforcers to reach a mutual understanding.
