Japanese Prof Kazuo Azuma, who worked tirelessly to build public opinion in favour of the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, was remembered in a condolence meeting yesterday. Shrabon Book Friends Association organised the meeting on its premises at the city's Aziz Super Market to pay the final homage to his departed soul. Litterateurs, intellectuals, artistes, and people from other professions joined the function and observed one-minute silence in his honour. Prof Azuma passed away on Wednesday in Japan at the age of 80, says a press release. He worked as the interpreter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his first visit to Japan in 1973. An ardent admirer of Bangla language and literature, Dr Azuma spent 20 years translating the whole literary works of Rabindranath Tagore. He also taught Japanese language as a professor at Visva-Bharati University in India.
