Papia gets bail

Court Correspondent
BNP lawmaker Advocate Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia and two pro-BNP lawyers got bail yesterday in a case filed for torching a vehicle in the city's Ramna on June 4. Three lawyers --Papia, Abu Bakar Siddique and Gazi Towhidul Islam--were sent to jail on Friday after they were arrested in another case filed by police in connection with assaulting the cops and preventing their work on Supreme Court premises on August 2. Though the three lawyers secured bail from the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court yesterday, they could not be freed from the jail as a hearing on a 10-day remand prayer in the police assault case is scheduled on Thursday. Earlier, seven other accused received bail in the torching case. Though names of the lawyers were not mentioned in its first information report (FIR) of the torching case, they were shown arrested in the case on Friday. The court yesterday fixed Thursday for hearing of the remand plea of the police as investigation officer (IO) DB Inspector Fazlur Rahman failed to produce progress report in the police assault case. The court also asked the IO to show cause for failing to submit progress of the investigation report. The three lawyers were produced before the court yesterday.
