Breastfeeding during fasting in Ramadan

Prof Dr M Karim Khan
Mothers often ask child specialists whether they should continue breastfeed their babies during fasting hours in holy Ramadan or not? Most of them believe that the production of breast milk reduces during fasting. So they seek advice to add food supplement or formula milk instead or in addition to breast milk during that period. In fact, many studies have done on this issue and fortunately there is no problem to continue breast feeding while on fasting. Moreover, the production of breast milk does not decrease. If a lactating mother keeps on fasting in Ramadan, she does not need to give any formula milk instead of breast milk. However, some studies showed that there is trivial change in the composition of milk during fasting. But when a lactating mother takes enough fluid and hygienic Iftar and Sehri, milk production will not decrease at all. Breast milk is the best food for infant and it is a gift from the Almighty Allah. We always should encourage the lactating mother to keep on breastfeeding her child during Ramadan as well.
