Environment officials fined yesterday a steel mill and a textile mill for air and water pollutions in Narayanganj and Gazipur. An enforcement team fined Bondar Steel Industry beside Dhaka-Chittagong highway Tk14.43 lakh for polluting the air with harmful smoke. The mill was running without operating air pollution control equipment. The thick layer of smoke emitted from the mill is hazardous for the health of the locals and highway passengers, said Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, director of the Department of Environment (DoE). The area adjacent to the mill was found covered with a blanket of smoke which contains harmful metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, and carbon dioxide, he said. The DoE team, led by Chowdhury, also snapped the gas connection to Masuma Khatun Textile Mills Ltd in Hotapara, Gazipur, as it was operating without environmental clearance. The mill was found releasing untreated liquid wastes into nearby canal and river, keeping the effluent treatment plant (ETP) shut, said Chowdhury. The mill was fined Tk71.55 lakh on charge of pollution during a drive last week.
