The unbearable loss

It shook my heart when I came to learn the news of tragic death of Mishuk Munier, CEO of ATN News and Tareque Masud, a noted filmmaker in a gruesome road crash. I know Mishuk not only as a colleague for some time as a broadcast journalist, but as one of the talented sons of Shaheed Professor Munier Chowdhury- my dearest teacher of Dhaka University. When I started teaching electronic journalism as a part-time teacher at the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University, I found him as a colleague. Mishuk took the initiative to bring some essential tools, particularly one editing machine and a video camera. However, he left the university to join Ekushey TV, which truly was his field with all his dynamism and great diversity. Mishuk had a great love for the camera and he served at the beginning of his career at the audio-visual unit of national museum. He once invited me to that audio-visual unit where I saw him even repairing a 16 mm film camera, possibly a Bolex one. Mishuk eventually proved himself to be one of the superb cameramen of his time. Besides, as trainer and broadcast journalist he had his own domain of perfection. His loss is irreparable to the country's broadcasting sector. The death of Tareque Masud who pioneered alternative cinema in the country is equally regrettable. He took a lot of pains to locate the rush footage of Lear Levin, who braved the adverse situation during our heroic liberation war to shoot those materials. Besides Muktir Gan, Tareque Masud has to his credit a number of films of international repute, particularly Matir Moina, which obtained critics' award at the Cannes Film Festival. Tareque Masud bade farewell to us when he is needed most at this critical time of the nation. May God give fortitudes to the members of their families to bear such a loss! Let us pray for the eternal salvation of their souls. Faruque Alamgir

August is a month of sorrow. Men with good dreams and good works are leaving us one after another. But we could protect noted filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk along with their co-workers if our administration were strong with execution of laws. May be the killer driver will get a little punishment. It is our responsibility to make Bangladesh a better place, which was handed over to us by the freedom fighters of 1971. Nazmul Ahsan Tuhin

On 13th Aug, 2011 the renowned filmmaker Tareque Masud and the CEO of ATN News Ashfaq Munir Mishuk were killed with three other people in a terrible road accident on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. Due to the bad condition of roads, poor condition of vehicles and unskilled driving these accidents are occurring every now and then. The govt. must play its role in combating road accidents. We are deeply shocked at the death of Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier. Md . Arshad Ali
