Keeping physiotherapy in the centre of disability management

Prof Dolilur Rahman

Physiotherapy is one of the most important approaches used in the management of disability. Unfortunately, physiotherapy in Bangladesh has not yet got the recognition as it deserves. Though physiotherapy is an essential component in managing many types of disability, very few things have been done for its improvement and full utilisation in prevention of disability. There is lack of qualified physiotherapists in the country. Due to lack of encouragement and monitoring by the proper authority, many people are being attracted to go quack and suffer more fatal complications instead of getting any benefit. There is very little initiative to improve the physiotherapy service taken by the government. Moreover, there is no new post created to employ rising number of physiotherapists, no recruitment in vacant posts. All these factors create a negative impression and physiotherapy is not being utilised properly for the benefit of a significant number of people living with various forms of disabilities specially the children. In many cases, physiotherapy could improve their quality of life and reduce the severity of disability and make them able to be financially active. In Bangladesh, just a little portion of people with disability can receive proper physiotherapy in contact of qualified physiotherapists. Others either depend randomly on quack physiotherapists (without degree) or receive no physiotherapy. The condition is getting worse with the rise of many unauthorised physiotherapy centres where people are frequently being victimised by quack. It is the high time to fix the problems and ensure that all people who are in need receive proper physiotherapy by qualified physiotherapist.
