Guard against abuse of power in anti-graft drive

TIB Rajshahi regional conference urges govt

Speakers at TIB's regional conference here yesterday said the government should guard against about abuse of power in its drive to curbing corruption. They said, anti-corruption drive will have no result if it is not meaningful and can have a positive and lasting impact on the society. They were speaking at a day-long Rajshahi regional conference on anti-graft social movement, organised jointly by Concerned Citizens' Committee (CCC) of Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) and Yes Group. It was held at a city community centre. Eminent litterateur Hasan Azizul Haque, TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman, CCC conveners Golam Arif Tipu, Amjad Hossain, Sudhin Kumar Lahidi, Saiful Islam Reja, Yes Group members Khairul Islam, Sonia Akhtar, Sonia Sultana and Hozzatul Islam spoke at the function. Over 200 anti-graft social movement activists from Rajshahi, Natore, Kustia, and Chapainawabganj districts took part in the programme. Prof Hasan Azizul Haque said, "Corruption should be rooted out from society, otherwise it will turn into flashy events of no value. "Our society will remain impaired so long corruption persists. “A totally corruption-free society can never be achieved, but it must be brought down to a tolerable level", he added. Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, "We do not want the government to misuse power while combating corruption". He said, TIB and ACC (Anti-corruption Commission) are working together to increase capacity of government institutions to eradicate institutional corruption and use of information technology in this regard. "We don't care of any government is unhappy (with us), TIB is always wants governments to play a proper role against corruption", he said. He noted that an adviser of present government expressed his dissatisfaction with TIB for making public a government anomaly in the recent past. The TIB executive director also urged anti-graft activists to work with dedication out of a social responsibility. The programme concluded with a visit to Padma riverbank and a cultural function.
