Former chief justice Habibur Rahman yesterday said education is the only way for development. "If you want to make any change among people in the country, it is only by education," he added. The chief adviser of a caretaker government was speaking at a prize distribution ceremony at Belaet Hossain Bahumukhi High School at Delduar upazila in Tangail. He also inaugurated a three-day science fair at the school and distributed prizes among students for good academic resulte. Founder of the school Delwar Hossain presided over the function. Former vice-chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University Zillur Rahman Siddiqui and noted economist and founder president of Centre for Policy Diologue (CPD) Rehman Sobahan attended at the function as special guests. Among others, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Akhter Ali Sarkar, Delduar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rekha Rani Balo, school managing committee vice-president Shakhawat Hossain and its headmaster Golam Rabbani were also present. Justice Habibur Rahman said all development efforts are being eaten up by illiteracy and rapid population growth. Now, science has provided all scopes for spread of education, technology and training. The scopes will remain unutilized if basic education can not be spread, covering all sections of people in rural areas, he said. Zillur Rahman Siddiqui said Bangladesh is a very resourceful country but the progress are being held back by corruption, which has spread to all walks of life. Unless corruption can be checked, development efforts will be meaningless, he said. Zillur Rahman however said the present caretaker government has taken some good initiatives.
