Statement at Ecosoc 10th Session

CHT body protests Dhaka's allegation

Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission (CHTC) yesterday objected to the allegations Ambassador and Permanent Representatives of Bangladesh to United Nations (UN) Abul Kalam Abdul Momen made in the Economic and Social Council's (Ecosoc) tenth session. Kalam questioned transparency, ethics, impartiality and objectivity of a study titled “Study on the status of implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord of 1997”, discussed in an Ecosoc session on July 29. United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) conducted the study with its Special Rapporteur Lars-Anders Baer, also a CHTC member. Kalam alleged that Lars-Anders concealed his identity, mandate and objective from the government authorities and other stakeholders during the study. CHTC, in a press release, provided texts of an e-mail Lars-Anders sent to Bangladesh permanent mission to UN explaining his identity as PFII rapporteur and his objective along with the completed study prior to making it public.
