Satkhira ex-BNP MP sued for land grabbing

Another case has been filed against Satkhira district BNP president and former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib for forcibly taking away a piece of land from a person in Kalaroa pourasabha area in 2005. Md. Nurul Islam Biswas, son of Ansar Ali Biswas of Jahanabad village in Kalaroa upazila, filed the case with Kalaroa police station Friday night (January 19). In the case, Nurul Islam alleged that Habib called him at his Kalaroa residence on August 10, 2005 and asked him to transfer his 33 decimal land in Kalaroa pourasava area in his (accused) name. As he refused, Habib demanded Tk 33 lakh from him as toll and threatened him to implicate him in false cases, the complainant alleged. On the morning of October 10, 2005, Habib went to Nurul Islam's residence at Jalalabad village and asked him to meet him at his house by 10 am, the complainant alleged. As he reached there, he saw a deed writer sitting with a deed written on stamps. Habib threatened him and asked him to sign the deed. Nurul Islam signed it but Habib did not pay him for the land, valued at Tk 33 lakh, he said in the complaint. Nurul Islam also alleged that he did not file any case against Habib earlier fearing reprisal as he was a ruling party lawmaker from the area. On contact, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa police station Nur Islam confirmed filing of the case. When contacted over cell phone, Habib said from an undisclosed place that the case against him was false, baseless and motivated. “A vested quarter is behind filing of the case to tarnish my image in the area”, he said. Earlier, Abdur Rahman Biswas of Sreepatipur village in Kalaroa also lodged an extortion case against Habib and five others on July 19 last year. Abu Naser Md Abu Sayeed, son of Abdus Sabur also lodged an extortion case against Habib for realising Tk 2 crore from him on July 30 last year. Abu Sayeed is editor of a local daily the Jugerbarta published from Satkhira town. Habib, charge-sheeted in the case filed by Abu Sayeed, is now on the run. He is also on the ACC (Anti Corruption Commission) list of corruption suspects. Joint forces raided his house at Kalaroa on July 4 last year, police said. Habib was elected from Satkhira- 1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency in 2001 election.
