Ensure food security to boost economy

Speakers at a workshop here yesterday urged the government and NGOs to take up comprehensive programmes to boost agriculture production to ensure food security for rural poor. They suggested steps to ensure To boost agriculture, fair price of agri-products must be guaranteed alongside providing inputs and training to farmers on latest technology, they said. The workshop jointly organised by Uttaran, a local NGO and Action Aid, was held at Satkhira Officer's Club. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Delwar Haidar was the chief guest while First Councillor of European Union delegation to Bangladesh Miss Francoise Collet, delegation member Claus De Glouse and Satkhira BRRI chief Dr Joynul Abedin and EU mission were special guests. The urged the government to increase capacity of farmers to enable them to adopt modern technology in agriculture. Without food security, there can not be any sustainable development of the rural economy, which is Bangladesh's lifeline, the speakers said.
