Jute workers stage sit-in for arrears
Road barricades today in Jessore, Khulna
Casual workers of six state-owned jute mills in Khulna-Jessore industrial belt staged sit-in from 10am to 5pm yesterday in front of their project directors' offices to press for their five-point demand including payment of all arrears.
They will put up barricades on Khulna-Jessore highway at Rajghat in Abhoynagar upazila in Jessore and on BIDC road at Khalishpur in Khulna city today.
Workers who quit their jobs under voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) and those sent on forced retirement will announce a fresh agitation programme today as their deadline to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) given on January 19 expired yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Casual Workers' Action Committee, a newly formed workers' body to realise the demands, has demanded probe into reasons for non-payment of arrear wages to Mohammod Ibrahim of Crescent Jute Mill who died of cardiac problem on Sunday allegedly without treatment for lack of money.
He was not paid his arrears despite repeated appeals to project director Abu Taher, his father Ruhul Amin claimed.
Thirteen workers of different jute mills in Khalishpur industrial belt died since June 6 last year. Most of them died without proper treatment.
