Teacher killed in broad daylight
Half-day hartal today
A primary school teacher was hacked to death allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League cadres in Gournadi upazila yesterday morning.
Family sources said the cadres waylaid Shah Farid Zamaddar, 29, on his way to work at Pinglakathi Government Primary School around 9:40am and fled the scene after leaving him hacked beside the road in Pinglakathi village.
Protesting the murder of Farid, also a former leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the local leaders of BNP called half-day hartal for today (Friday) in the upazila. At a rally, they demanded immediate arrest and punishment of his killers.
However, no case was lodged till filing of this report at 9:00pm last night as Shah Jamal Zamaddar, brother of the victim, said police were pressuring on them to drop the names of BCL leaders and cadres and delaying to register the case.
Jamal said his brother got an altercation with local Awami League and BCL cadres over a football tournament for primary schools in the upazila last month. Over that incident, a group of BCL cadres led by the upazila BCL secretary, Nayon Sharif, murdered Farid.
Witness to the incident and a village woman, Shefali, said three youths riding on motorcycle fled the scene after chopping Farid. The victim was former president of Chandshi union and vice-president Gournadi Government College units of JCD.
