Freedom fighters seek president's clemancy

Hundreds of freedom fighters in Rajshahi demanded mercy of fellow freedom fighter Ali Khawaza MA Mazid, who was awarded capital punishment in a murder case five years ago. They made the demand at a human chain in Shaheb bazar area yseterday. They also demanded withdrawal of the false case against Mazid saying that Mazid, who was mimed during the Liberations War, was implicated in the case with a political motive and was innocent. They also said to have sent a prayer to the president through the prime minister for Mazid's clemency. The protestors said the local leaders of former BNP-Jamaat government intentionally implicated Mazid in the murder of BNP leader Abdul Hamid Moru and got him convicted in the case producing false witnesses and evidences. They said Mazid was blamed for the murder despite some activists of the outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), who were arrested, gave judicial confessions of committing the murder. Abdul Hamid was killed by unknown assailants on November 9, 2003. Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, lawmakers Fazle Hossain Badsha and Zinnatunesa Talukhdar, Rajshahi Writers Council President Ruhul Amin Pramanik, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Organising Secretary Anwar Hossain Pahari Bir Protik, Rajshahi district unit Commander Saidur Rahman and city unit Commander Abdul Mannan. Mazid was the presidium member of the Workers Party district unit. He has been suffering in Rajshahi Central Jail since he was convicted in murder case in June 2006. Along with Mazid, his nephew Mohammad Boltu and UP member Abdus Shukur Ali were also awarded death sentence in the verdict by a Rajshahi court. Three others were given life term sentence.
