Monkeys in old town!
The residents of old Dhaka have been living with a serious problem. Monkeys frequently visit their houses taking away foods, damaging utensils, water-pipelines, etc. Often these monkeys, in a group of 40-50, attack and even bite the children.
With the expansion of the Dhaka city accompanied by industrialisation, these monkeys have lost their natural habitat and are living with the problem of extreme food scarcity. They mostly live on sun-shades/roofs of the buildings in old town. They are increasingly becoming a threat to the old town residents.
Previously, I have written about the monkey menace in these columns. I would once again like to draw the attention of the authorities to take appropriate measures to save the old town residents from the monkey menace. Earlier, I suggested the creation of a natural forest outside the Dhaka city and shifting these monkeys there. Alternatively, these monkeys may be transferred to different zoos and forest areas of the country. Some of them may be exported to foreign zoos or safari parks as gifts.
