Restore caretaker govt system
BNP urges govt
BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday asked the government to restore the caretaker government system.
"Understand the reality and give elections under a non-party caretaker government before facing a disaster," he said warning the government. The BNP leader was speaking at a press briefing at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital.
Talking about the prime minister's speech on Saturday, he said the premier wants to impose an election on the nation, ignoring the views of constitutional experts, civil society members and others. "But people won't accept it."
Protesting Hasina's comment on TV talk shows, he said the prime minister has lost her tolerance of truth and that is why she is trying to control the media. The prime minister had said that people tell lies in TV talk shows.
Replying to a query regarding formation of the election commission (EC), he said the opposition wants a neutral EC for a free and fair election next time.
"We will give our proposals on it [EC] in time."
Fakhrul at the press briefing also declared that the Dhaka-Chittagong road March set earlier has been postponed. "A public meeting will be held in Mymensingh possibly on October 25 or 26. But it won't be a road march," he said.
