Eight die in road accidents
Eight people were killed and 21 others injured in road accidents in Dhaka, Dinajpur, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, and Feni yesterday and Wednesday.
Our staff correspondent reports: A nine-year-old schoolboy died after being hit by a pickup van at West Agargaon in the city yesterday.
The victim, Mohammad Jasim, a student of class III, was son of Khokon Mia.
The father said Jasim was standing beside a rickshaw they just got off in the area. Suddenly the pickup van from a nearby garage hit his son from behind. Jasim was declared dead in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said the pickup van was driven by an 18-year-old boy. Police arrested the boy and seized the vehicle.
Meanwhile, a private car knocked down Yasin, 20, a carpenter of Moghbazar, at Badda in the city yesterday, killing him on the spot.
The youth was riding a bicycle to his workplace at Badda, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge, Badda Police Station.
Our Dinajpur correspondent says: An Adivasi woman and her daughter died as a truck hit an improvised three-wheeler they were riding at Rampur intersection on Dinajpur-Panchagarh highway Wednesday night.
Jaba Murmu, 30, wife of Niranjan Mardi of Mukundapur village in Kaharol upazila, and her three-year-old daughter Shonati Mardi were bound for a temple to celebrate Durga Puja.
Locals caught the truck driver Illias and handed him over to Birganj police.
Our Noakhali correspondent reports: Two people were killed and 21 others injured in a bus-truck collision on Sonaimuri-Laksam road in Naotola area under Sonaimuri upazila yesterday.
One of the deceased was identified as Shahjahan, 60, driver of the truck. Identity of the other victim could not be known.
Police and witnesses said Shahjahan succumbed to his injuries in Noakhali General Hospital.
The other injured were taken to Noakhali Medical College Hospital and other local clinics.
Our Brahmanbaria correspondent adds: A teenage boy was killed after being knocked down by a truck at Maddyapara in Brahmanbaria municipality area Wednesday night.
The victim, Kawser Mia, 16, was son of Sher Ali of Tholiara village in the sadar upazila.
Police said the truck hit Kawser and injured him seriously. He died on the way to Brahmanbaria sadar hospital. Locals seized the truck, but the driver escaped.
A Feni correspondent reports: Two people were killed as a covered van rammed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Silonia area on the bypass of Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the district yesterday.
Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
