Sylhet dist, city AL bodies soon
New committees of the Sylhet district and city units of Awami League will be announced soon after six years of delay caused by disagreement among top leaders of the units.
AL President Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, approved the committees after a meeting with the organising secretaries last week, according to the party sources.
The committees are almost final and would be announced upon return of the party General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam from the UK by October 19, Mesbah Uddin Siraj, central organising secretary, Sylhet division, told this correspondent yesterday.
The committees each will be consisted of 71 persons including the president, six vice-presidents, and three organising secretaries, according to documents obtained by this correspondent.
Abduj Jahir Chowdhury Sufian and lawmaker Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury have been named as the president and general secretary of the new district committee while Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamnran has been taken as the president and former BCL leader Asad Uddin as the general secretary in the new city committee.
Full-fledged council for the two units was held last time in late 2002 for a period of three years. However, the council in 2005 was not held because of the fear of factional clashes.
The central leaders in the 2005 conference stopped voting or council session to avoid possible clashes and just declared the names for the four top posts of the district unit and two top posts for the city unit.
In 2005, ANM Shafiq was announced as the president, Jahir Sufian as the senior vice-president, Iftekhar Hossain Shamim as the general secretary and Abdul Khaliq Nayan as the joint secretary in the district committee while Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamnran was named as the president and Mesbah Uddin Siraj as the general secretary in the city committee.
The council of the two committees has delayed as the units' top leaders offered separate and divergent lists for the posts down the ladder.
