Mugger beaten
An agitating mob caught and beat a mugger while he was fleeing with Tk 1 lakh from a hotel staff at Dainik Bangla intersection in the city's Paltan yesterday.
Police rescued injured mugger Mizanur Rahman, and admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Witnesses said three muggers snatched Tk 1 lakh from Rezaul Karim, manager of Baishakhi Hotel and Restaurant, on Topkhana Road around 12:30pm when he was going to Motijheel Branch of Islami Bank to deposit Tk 1.47 lakh.
Hearing cry for help, local people caught Mizanur and gave him a good beating. Later, police rescued him. However, two of his accomplices managed to flee.
Rezaul told reporters at DMCH that though he was carrying Tk 1.47 lakh, muggers however could not snatch rest of the amount, as it was in his another pocket.
Meanwhile, Farid Ahmed, owner of the restaurant, told reporters that Habibur Rahman, sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station who took the mugger to DMCH with other cops, physically assaulted him (Farid) before the hospital as he wanted to go to the police station alone to file a case in this connection.
When contacted, SI Habibur denied the allegation.
