Traffic halts on Dhaka-Sylhet road
Thousands of vehicles yesterday remained stranded on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway as a local transport owner group of Habiganj barricaded the highway protesting attack on their office and seizing of their vehicles by a rival group.
Called by Habiganj Motor Malik Group, drivers of some 50 buses blocked the highway at Bir Uttam General Rab roundabout in Shaistaganj from 2:00pm to 8:00pm, said locals and police.
Habiganj Motor Malik Group President Fazlur Rahman Chowdhury said their office at Central Bus Terminal at Kodomtoli in Sylhet was attacked and forcibly occupied by another transport owner group Habiganj Super Service yesterday morning.
Earlier, Habiganj Super Service forcibly seized 13 of their vehicles at the terminal 3 days back, he said.
Both the groups had a long standing rivalry over controlling bus service on Habiganj-Sylhet route, said locals.
