91pc school children face torture, say psychologists
Around 91 percent school going children in Bangladesh are tortured both mentally and physically at their homes and at schools, hampering their mental growth, said psychologists.
The psychologists suggested that the guardians create a child-friendly atmosphere in the family to ensure sound mental health and development of their children.
"A peaceful environment should be ensured for the proper mental growth of children, as their mentality is formed according to their surroundings,” said Prof Jhunu Shamsun Nahar of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
She was addressing a roundtable titled “The Great Push: Investing in Mental Health", held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka University (DU) yesterday.
Rights body Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), Students' Counselling and Guidance office, DU, and Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology of the university jointly organised the programme marking the International Mental Health Day 2011 (October 10).
The experts said rapid urbanisation, emergence of small families, repression on women, and uncontrolled lust for consumption are the key factors behind the mental instability and disorder in people in the society.
Shaheen Islam, adviser of Psycho-social Counselling Component, ASK, presented a keynote paper on the occasion while psychologist Prof Mehtab Khanam and Prof Shafiqur Rahman, director of Secondary Education of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, also spoke.
