President keen on trade expansion with Pakistan
President Zillur Rahman on Tuesday emphasised expanding mutual cooperation, trade and commerce and communications with Pakistan.
He made the remark newly appointed Pakistani High Commissioner to Bangladesh Afrasiab Mehdi Hashmi presented his credentials to the president at Bangabhaban.
Welcoming the new high commissioner, the president said both Bangladesh and Pakistan belong to the same culture and history and the mutual cooperation between the two would be further increased with time.
Conveying the best wishes of the president and prime minister of his country, Hashmi said Bangladesh is not only a friend, but a brother of Pakistan.
He expressed his gratitude to the Bangladeshi government for extending help to the flood affected people in Pakistan.
He said, “Pakistan is keen to increase socio-economic ties, trade relations and people-to-people connectivity with Bangladesh,” he said.
“We will cooperate with each other in the Saarc, OIC and other international forums,” he added.
Referring to the meetings between the prime ministers of Pakistan and Bangladesh in Sharm-el-Sheikh and Thimphu, he said both the meetings were held in a cordial and friendly manner.
He said Pakistan is keen to increase the number of scholarships for the training of Bangladeshi civil and military officials in Islamabad Foreign Service Academy.
Secretaries to the president and high officials of the foreign ministry were present.
Earlier, on his arrival at Bangabhaban, the Pakistani high commissioner was given a guard of honour by a smart contingent of the President Guard Regiment.
