RU vet students threaten fast-unto-death

Students of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science department of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a human chain wearing burial clothes on the campus yesterday protesting the opening of Animal Husbandry Science faculty at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU). At a rally, the protesting students threatened to go on fast-unto-death and strike on the campus to press home their demand. They alleged that the PSTU authorities at a syndicate meeting on October 15 formed the separate Animal Husbandry faculty though Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science department have already existed. They said the newly opened department would increase their job crisis making their future uncertain. Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and Prof Dr Mohammad Jalal Uddin Sarder, chairman of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science department, urged the government and University Grants Commission (UGC) to take immediate initiatives to stop functioning the Animal Husbandry department. The UGC called a meeting with the vice-chancellors and concerned authorities of different universities today to look into the matter.
