32 Jamaat-Shibir men on remand
A Chittagong court yesterday granted a 36-hour remand against each of the arrested 32 Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists including former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury in a case filed for attacking police and vandalising vehicles in the port city on September 19.
Of the arrestees, five were arrested during an overnight raid till early yesterday at several dormitories housing Jamaat-Shibir men in the city.
They are Robiul Hossain alias Mithu, 50, Jalal Uddin, 25, Mohammad Ershad, 25, Shahsul Haque, 22, and Asaduzzaman Rubel, 18.
They were shown arrested in the case filed with Panchlaish Police Station for attacking police and vandalising vehicles at Muradpur on September 19, said Md Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchlaish Police Station.
Police earlier arrested 28 other Jamaat-Shibir men in this connection, the OC added.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman granted the remand after the 33 detained Jamaat-Shibir men were produced before the court yesterday, said Main Uddin, assistant commissioner (prosecution).
The court, however, fixed October 23 for the remand hearing of detained Robiul Hossain since he was sick, said Main Uddin.
