A Titas Gas pipeline exploded early yesterday in Savar, when road construction workers accidentally bore a hole into it, leading to a fire that lasted four hours. The explosion cut off gas supply in and around the Savar EPZ. The explosion occurred around 1:30am on Thursday while the workers hit the 8-inch gas pipeline around 15 feet below the ground near a small bridge on Nabinagar road while they were piling earth, Titas Managing Director Abdul Aziz Khan told The Daily Star. Without realising their mistake, the workers continued piling earth for two more hours until there was an explosion, he said. According to Titas Gas officials, an emergency team of Titas rushed to the spot around 3.30am and put out the flame early in the morning. The damage to the pipeline was severe, the affected part of the pipeline needs to be cut and replaced which will take up to midnight Friday, officials added.
