Blessing to Hamas?
The recent Israel-Palestine prisoner exchange may be a positive sign for the region, though many fear prisoners' regression, increased hostage tactics and a supposed PR defeat for Israel. What may be interesting to ponder is the Israeli decision to negotiate with Hamas.
Over the past years, Israel has doggedly refused to negotiate with what it dubbed 'a terrorist organisation'. This surprising deal with Hamas represents a major shift in policy and undermines the Mahmoud Abbas led government and its statehood bid. And we know patronising oppositions have long been an effective, global strategy to keep conflicts alive. We fear an Israel-blessed Hamas could further mire the region in conflict and indefinitely postpone the statehood for Palestine.
