Hundred of students of Animal Husbandry department of Bangladesh Agriculture University in Mymensingh yesterday went on a rampage at the University (BAU) Grants Commission (UGC) office at Agargaon in the city injuring several staff and ransacking six vehicles. The students, who had come to Dhaka boarding seven rented buses from Mymensingh, took to the streets in front of the UGC office around 1:30pm to press home their three-point demands. Earlier, they submitted a memorandum to the UGC chairman mentioning their demands. The department's students demand that the four-year tenure of their course can not be lengthened, nor can their department be opened in other universities. Ferdows Zaman Tuhin, a deputy secretary of education ministry, said the UGC officials assured the students of considering their demands, yet the students went unruly. Police and witnesses said some staff were injured when the students threw brickbats at the UGC building and ransacked the vehicles parked on its premises. At one stage, police detained six of the students and seized the rented buses. However, they were released after Professor Dr Mostafizur Rahman, acting vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agriculture University, asked apology on behalf of the unruly students from the UGC chairman.
