Though food production in our country has tripled since independence, still four crore people are living below the poverty line. Wherever we go we see poverty writ large on the faces of the poor tattered clothes, their bodies emaciated from malnutrition. Who are to blame for this situation? The insensitivity in us is responsible for the attitude of treating the poor with contempt and not thinking why they are poor. They are poor not because they are so destined, but because the system has pushed them into this miserable state. We opted for white collar jobs in the growing cities forgetting our roots in the villages and neglecting the farmer parents who brought us up so painstakingly. Long estranged from nature, the educated and rich governing class in the town has established a system that is continuing to exploit the countryside and its people. The successive governments institutionalised criminality and mediocrity banishing good and efficient people from all important positions. So now when I think about bettering the condition, the first thought that comes to my mind is 'attitude'. Cannot we become a clean nation where we will see no enmity, theft, poverty and violence? Cannot we stun the world by making a drastic change for the better? Of course, we can, because our ancestors could fight the tyrants like the Borgi, the British colonialists and the brutal Pakistani rulers. So, let us fight the final battle against the 'Bivishon' inside the house. Who achieved emancipation without blood?
