Petty crimes--mugging and stealing--have increased significantly on the Rajshahi University (RU) campus recently as BCL men are allegedly involved in the criminal activities. Tasfiqur Rahman Pavel, a fourth year student of Marketing department, said his brand Laptop was stolen from his room No 420 at Bangabandhu hall on the campus on Saturday night. He alleged that his roommate BCL activist Jahidur Rahman alias Jahid, also a student of Public Administration department, has stolen his Laptop from the room while he was on the campus. When contacted, Jahid claimed that he was not in the hall as he went to his village home for two days. Mridul Kanti Dhar and Papiya Sultana Rabu, students of Theatre and Music department alleged that some assailants at gunpoint snatched two mobile phone sets from them on the campus at the same night. On 26 October, muggers also snatched mobile phone sets and Tk 2,000 from Mainul Islam and Shapon Mia, the first year honours admission seekers from Lalmonirhat. Assaduzzaman Asad, another admission seeker from Khulna, alleged that some persons mugged his mobile phone set from him in the game room of Bangabandhu hall on the night of October 25. Campus sources alleged that students fell victim of mugging by BCL men on the campus every day but nobody dares to disclose it fearing threat of BCL men. RU unit BCL general secretary Abu Hossain Bipu denied the allegation against the BCL activists and said stern action will be taken if any BCL man is found involved in such crimes. RU Proctor Prof Choudhury Muhammad Zakaria told The Daily Star that they are trying to catch the snatchers.
