Info court asks Rajuk, BRTA
Staff Correspondent
A court of the Information Commission yesterday directed the officials concerned of Rajuk and BRTA to provide two citizens with information they sought under the right to information (RTI) act. Member planning of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) Sheikh Abdul Mannan who is now responsible for providing information, admitted to the court that he was not clear about the rules and regulations of RTI Act, 2009. Mannan also said he was not in the charge when Dr Shamsul Bari of Banani sought information about Rajuk policy on building construction. As information seekers are often denied of information on the plea of absence of responsible officials, the information commission has recommended each institution to appoint an additional assistant official to ensure applicants get information, said Chief Information Commissioner Mohammad Zamir during the hearing. Bari filed a complaint with the commission as the official concerned at Rajuk refused to give him information within 20 working days after he submitted an application on May 29. After hearing, the commission directed the Rajuk official to provide Bari information after Eid vacation. Meanwhile, the information commission also ordered AKM Shamim Akter, secretary (additional charge) of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), to provide information to Fakhrul Islam, a student of Dhaka University, within November 20. Fakhrul applied on March 3 to BRTA for seeking information about the list of people against whom BRTA issued driving licences in 2010 and number of drivers punished by the authorities for driving vehicles without licences. But he was not provided with the information as per the act and he filed a complaint with the commission on August 10.
