Former army sergeant held for deceiving people
Detective Branch (DB) of police yesterday arrested a former army sergeant on charge of deceiving people by assuring them of getting job at Bangladesh Railway office in lieu of money.
Nazrul Islam, 45, of Sirajganj was arrested from a residential hotel named Haven in the city's Seroil area in the morning.
Abdul Alim, a victim of the deceit, filed a case against Nazrul and three others with Boalia Model Police Station.
According to DB officials, the accused persons promised the job to five students including Alim and asked Tk 4 lakh from each.
The accused realised Tk 2 lakh in advance and sat for the recruitment tests on October 21 as proxy for the students. However, failing the tests, the latter denied returning the money.
The latter also took the students to Rajshahi yesterday assuring them of getting the job through viva voce, DB officials added.
Smelling suspicion, the students informed the matter to DB police.
Assistant commissioner Rokonuzzaman of DB of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police said, Nazrul confessed taking Tk 2 lakh from the plaintiff and revealed the names of his associates as Selim, Ratan and Shahidul.
