5 yrs RI to Moulvibazar BNP president, secretary for extortion
Moulvibazar Sadar upazila BNP president Faruk Ahmed and secretary Ayas Ahmed, both close allies of former lawmaker Naser Rahman, were sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment in an extortion case. They were also fined Tk 5,000 each, in default to suffer more six months' imprisonment.
Additional Sessions Judge Md Motahar Hussain delivered the verdict while convicted Ayas Ahmed was in the dock. Faruk Ahmed is absconding.
Ayas Ahmed is also a ward commissioner in Moulvibazar Pourasava.
Ashraf Ahmed, an activist of BNP's youth front Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, filed a case with Moulvibazar Sadar police station on April 6 last yaer. In the case, the Jubo Dal activist alleged that he got a contract in 2003 to supply sand for construction of Sylhet-Dhaka highway during BNP rule. As he got the contract, Faruk Ahmed and Ayas Ahmed demanded Tk 20 lakh from him as extortion. Ashraf paid Tk five lakh to Faruk and Tk 6 lakh to Ayas, he said in the complaint.
