Reopen Rangpur Public Library
Civil society members demand
Civil society members in the town under the banner of Shikhha O Sangskriti Charcha Kendra at a press conference yesterday demanded reopening 154 year-old Rangpur Public Library to benefit the townspeople, particularly students and youngsters.
They also demanded formation of a managing committee with the civil society members to run the library.
The then deputy commissioner of Rangpur Tofael Ahmed in 1985 formed an ad-hoc committee including district administration officials to run the library.
The ad-hoc committee did not take any step to hold an election to form a managing committee and subsequently the effort died down. Since then, the library is closed due to absence of an elected committee to run it, Akbor Hosen, convener of Rangpur Public Library Revival Committee told the press conference held on its premises.
It was also attended by Dr. Rezaul Hoque, Dr. Mofizul Islam Mantu and former headmaster of Rangpur Girls High School Shahana Begum.
Dr. Rezaul Hoque claimed that a large number of
valuable books were lost from the library but the district administration did not probe the matter despite requests from different quarters.
