Women to play vital role in trade

The country's women always perform their duties smoothly, said Commerce Minister Lt Col (Retd) Faruk Khan at a programme in the port city yesterday.
He was speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony of 5th International Women's SME Expo Bangladesh 2011 organised by Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CWCCI) at Polo ground.
Bangladeshi women have advanced in many respects today, he said with the expectation that women will play a vital role in the country's trade and commerce in future.
Terming Chittagong as the country's commercial hub, the commerce minister said the government has taken many initiatives for the city's development.
A specilised economic zone is under-process to be set up in Chittagong, after implementation of which more foreign investments will come to the country, he said.
Pointing at the price of essentials that was under control this Eid, he praised the country's businessmen.
Awami League lawmaker MA Latif, special guest to the programme, said the lawmakers should be more vocal in the parliament regarding the public issues rather than their own facilities.
He criticised the bureaucratic tangles in the country in the implementation of any project for the sake of public interest.
AK Azad, president of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged Export Promotion Bureau to preserve quota in different fairs which they participate abroad.
He also urged Bangladesh Bank for initiating projects for the sake of women entrepreneurs.
AL lawmaker Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury, Jatiya Party lawmaker in reserved seat Mahjabeen Morshed and CWCCI vice-president Gulshana Ali also spoke at the programme chaired by CWCCI president Monwara Hakim Ali.
The month-long fair will end on December 10, said CWCCI sources.
