Our Correspondent, Rangamati
Public representatives and civil society leaders yesterday called upon leaders and activists of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) to stop fighting in the hills. They were speaking at a public meeting held at Sapchhari Union Parishad office under sadar upazila in Rangamati. Similar meetings were held at different Union Parishad offices in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari. UPDF has been opposing the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord since the signing on December 2, 1997 and demanding full autonomy in the hills while PCJSS is demanding the accord's complete implementation. Terming the clashes as “fighting between brothers”, the speakers blamed the Awami League-led government for the unrest and called upon the rival parties to unite through dialogues for the greater interest of the Jummo people. They urged the government for the accord's complete implementation without further delay and immediate steps to resolve the crisis. The government would have to take responsibility if any more bloodshed occurred in the region, they warned. Sapchhari Union Chairman Shimul Bikash Chakma chaired the meeting, where Laxmi Chandra Karbari, Baneswar Karbari, Samitra Chakma, Niru Kumar Chakma, Katrik Dewan and Radesur Chakma also spoke.
